The Importance of Functional Behaviour Assessments in Positive Behaviour Support

When a child or individual is showing behaviours of concern, the most helpful thing we can do is seek to understand why. In Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), we use a process called a Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to do just that. An FBA helps us understand the function or purpose of the behaviour.

What Is a Functional Behaviour Assessment?

A Functional Behaviour Assessment is a structured process used to identify the triggers (what happens before), the behaviour itself, and the consequences (what happens after). It aims to uncover what the individual is trying to communicate or achieve through their behaviour. This process includes collecting information through interviews, observations, and data tracking. Practitioners may talk to parents, educators, or support staff, and observe the individual in different settings to identify patterns. The goal is to get a complete picture of the person’s day and the environments in which the behaviour is happening.

Why Is an FBA So Important?

Without an FBA, we risk putting strategies in place that either don’t help or even make the situation worse.

Once we understand the function of the behaviour, we can develop a plan that works with the individual. This may include:

  • Changing the environment to reduce triggers

  • Teaching new skills (such as asking for help or taking a break)

  • Adjusting communication methods to suit their needs

  • Creating supportive routines and proactive strategies

  • Using appropriate responses when the behaviour occurs

A PBS Plan Built on FBA

The insights from an FBA form the foundation of a PBS plan. This plan is person-centred, proactive, and focused on improving the individual’s quality of life - not just reducing behaviours. It involves everyone in the person’s life and is tailored to their values, goals, and needs.

Where to Start

If your child is showing behaviours of concern and you're unsure where to begin, the first step is to get in touch with a behaviour support practitioner. At Bloom, we use functional behaviour assessments as a core part of our approach to ensure that every support plan is grounded in evidence and tailored to the individual.
